Turning Instagram Posts Tagged at Your Business Into Repeat Customers

From likes to comments to views, there are a number of ways followers engage with your business on social media. If you’re a savvy bar or restaurant owner, you make the most of every virtual customer interaction, leaving no stone unturned. One engagement opportunity that is commonly overlooked, but incredibly valuable for building your brand and customer relationships, is location tagging. Read on to learn how to use this feature and turn these tagged posts into loyal customers.

What are Posts Tagged at My Location?

This might sound like a silly question, but understanding the difference between posts that tag your @handle versus your location can be confusing. Location tagging occurs when patrons tag a photo at the address of your bar or restaurant on Instagram. When someone tags your handle (your Instagram username with an “@” sign in front of it), you get a notification so it’s easy to track and respond to. But photos tagged at your location are different because the physical location of your bar or restaurant is not connected to your account. This means you won’t get a notification when someone tags a post at your establishment.

This is significant because it means many bar and restaurant owners do not notice posts tagged at their location and thus miss out on lots of opportunities to acquire and engage customers.

How to Find Posts Tagged at Your Bar or Restaurant

So, how do you see these posts? To see posts tagged at your location, hit the magnifying glass at the bottom of your Instagram account and search for your bar or restaurant. Then click the “Places” tab at the top of the screen (or look for the map icon if you are searching on the web). Tap the correct option and voila! These are all the posts tagged at your establishment, sorted in order of popularity (Top Posts) and by posting date (Most Recent). Alternately, if you are a TapHunter for Business customer, you can simply navigate to your dashboard to view these posts.

Turning Tagged Posts Into Repeat Customers

Follow these best practices for turning posts tagged at your location into repeat customers.

Like and comment on every post. Follow the guest, make sure to tailor your comments to the post, and use discretion about which posts are inappropriate to comment on. A simple “Thanks for dining with us!” or “Glad you enjoyed your experience, we loved serving you!” reflects positively on your brand and encourages customers to come back. You could also consider inviting the guest to send you a direct message in order to receive a special offer on their next visit. This greatly increases the chance that this person will return to your bar or restaurant soon and spread the word to their friends. When you engage with your customers’ posts, it shows that you appreciate their patronage and leaves a lasting positive impression.

Follow guests’ profiles to build community and gather intel. Following guests’ profiles encourages them to follow you back, building your social community. While commenting on customers’ personal photos once they’ve accepted your follow request may be inappropriate, passively scrolling through their posts is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about your customer base. Maybe guests are die-hard football fans, or maybe they like to hike on weekends. What promos can you offer them? What music should you play? What new food trend could inspire your spring appetizer?

Repost rave reviews. If a guest shares a great review of their experience at your bar or restaurant, consider reposting it to your profile. This is free marketing! Asking for permission to repost your patrons’ Instagram posts is also a great way to build a relationship with them and to foster a sense of community.
